In reply to your letter of the 28th September,
I have to inform you that remarkably little is known of the geology of Hong Kong. The only informa- tion I have been able to obtain is from a brief article in Nature nearly forty years ago. The rocks are mainly crystalline and metalliferous. occur. Even if these do not prove to be in payable
Minerals amounts, it is desirable for other purposes - oulture, hygienė; and water supply for instance that a trustworthy investigation of the geology should be made.

The most satisfactory mode of carrying out the work would be to arrange with a member of the staff of one of the Universities in the colony or Canada to obtain special leave for a year for the purpose. Otherwise it would not be easy to get an able man for the short time needed except at considerable cost.
I would suggest that the sum of £1,000 should be paid for a twelve months' absence from home.
In addition to that there would be travell- ing and other expenses during the voyage out and home and while the work was proceeding and the wages of a local assistant, also the cost of analyses and assays making an inclusive total of say £1,750.
I am, Sir, Your obedient Servant,
Tho Under Secretary of State,
Colonial Office,
